Position: Director of Youth and Family Ministries
Status: Full Time, salaried with Benefits
Reports to: Pastor
Purpose: To lead, develop, coordinate, manage and evaluate the youth and family ministries at First United Methodist Church of St. Petersburg to develop mature Christian Youth who Learn, Serve and Share the Gospel.
Position Duties and Responsibilities
Vision, Mission, Strategies and Evaluation
• Assess, design and implement the vision of the Youth and Family Ministries at FUMC with the help of the Youth Council for senior high and middle school students which includes planning and fellowship meetings, and regular meetings with senior high leaders and adult advisors.
• Communicate this vision to the congregation, youth and community.
• Ensure that curriculum and program content is concurrent with the goals of faith growth and development by teaming with volunteers.
• Anticipate and prepare for the continued growth of FUMC Youth and Family Ministry.
Volunteer Management
• Identify and implement a volunteer recruitment program for lay youth leaders that includes youth parental involvement and extends to volunteers outside the current youth program.
• Develop, train and nurture lay youth leaders necessary to implement the vision.
• Ensure lay youth leaders are equipped to be successful volunteers.
• Provide group leadership training and skill development, which results in active participation by lay youth leaders in the formulation and conduct of this ministry.
• Train, recruit and support lay youth leaders and delegate responsibilities to them. Follow-up with observations, instructions, and encouragement.
Youth & Family Leadership
• Oversight of Junior High and Senior High youth programs. These programs include worship, spiritual development, education, fellowship, discipleship. evangelism, missions, leadership training and affirmation of youth and support of parents of youth.
• Work with lay youth leader team in planning and implementation of regular retreats, events, programs, camps and mission trips for grades 6-12.
• Determine and pursue common ministry goals with other FUMC Ministries.
• Commitment to professional educational development.
• Plans and directs senior highs in carrying out Youth Sunday.
• Appoint youth members to the Youth Advisory Council and meet monthly to discuss the direction and effectiveness of the youth program.
• Organize and lead an annual confirmation class in consultation with the pastors and lay leaders.
• Attend Sunday worship services and special events at FUMC.
Ministry of Presence
• Meet with youth one-on-one and in small group settings as appropriate for counseling, mentoring and support.
• Provide opportunity for spiritual growth and learning.
• Maintain a consistent presence with youth and leaders at events, programs and worship, including school plays, sporting events and musicals as they support youth.
• Available to youth for counseling and general discussion through the maintenance of regular office hours and by special appointment.
• Actively engage Adult Advisors and Counseling Ministry at FUMC as needed for youth.
• Seeks to become acquainted with and works through and with families to nurture a mature Christian faith in youth.
• Evaluate, recommend and champion appropriate curriculum to be used as a standard by youth staff and volunteers.
• Select curriculum and teach and/or lead volunteers in teaching Sunday school classes
Administrative Responsibilities
• With the assistance of Youth Council, develop and be responsible for the Youth and Family Ministries budget.
• Develop and maintain the youth ministry presence in various communication tools.
• Work with the staff to maintain an accurate calendar of ministry events.
• Hold regular office hours.
• Attend weekly staff meetings.
• Maintains and keeps current a file of all programs, activities and events which have been developed as a part of this ministry.
• Plan, provide and coordinate leadership and curriculum for all youth activities. These may include Junior and Senior High Sunday School programs, Youth Trips, various outings, trips, weekend retreats, concerts, student contact, and periodic day and evening programming.
• Ensures that all communications are delivered in and effective and timely manner
Competencies Required:
• Strong personal faith in Jesus Christ and a commitment to the United Methodist Church.
• Membership in First United Methodist Church is strongly recommended.
• Director or management experience in large church youth ministry.
• Strong organizational and administrative abilities, leveraging available technology tools for communication and program management/execution
• Ability to work in a team setting.
• Experience developing, communicating and implementing vision.
• Demonstrated ability to be relational with students, parents and adult volunteers.
• Experience recruiting and training adult volunteers.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
Available to work evenings, weekends and extended hours when requested. Ability to develop and respect personal boundaries is a necessity. Weekly staff meetings and team meetings are required. 1 to 2 major summer trips (7-12 days) can be expected, as well as several weekend retreats throughout the course of the school year.
